The third Wireless Wednesday meetup on mobile innovations in agriculture is slated for 27th June 2012. The meetup for mobile application developers, entrepreneurs, farmers, NGOs, Government representatives, and other stakeholders is supported by USAID through DAI. It is organized by m:lab East Africa for the purpose of encouraging interaction between developers/entrepreneurs and potential users of agricultural innovations using mobile tech platforms.
The theme of the June event is “Reviewing mobile apps targeting agricultural productivity”.
At the two hour focus group discussion session, participants will discuss the features and offerings of the mobile services targeting productivity of farmers. Short presentations will be made of the following :-
1.Mkulima Calc by Elisha Bwatuti
2.GreenhousePro by Elija Ngahu
3.FarmPal by Thomas Kioko
4.Fishmate by Mukeli Matei
5.GreenHouse DIY by Gerald Kibugi
6.mPoultry by Musa Mwanje
The increasing penetration of mobile phones in Kenya has led to a rise in mobile based information dissemination services, that have potential aim to inform, educate and empower farmers with weather, market, price, and other useful information that seek to increase productivity in the agriculture sector. This is why Wireless Wednesday seeks to bring the different stakeholders in the sector to discuss innovations already in the market and to see whether they are applicable.
Two Wireless Wednesay meetups on agriculture have been held this year. Recap articles on the event can be found on this blog as follows :-
