PIVOT East 2014 Semi-finalists Announced

PIVOT East, an innovative startups competition geared towards nurturing the growing ICT talent in East Africa, has unveiled semifinalist for this year’s competition. The competition opened a call for applications in February 2014 with startups from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia applying through an online portal (startups.pivoteast.com)

To reach the best startups in the region, PIVOT Eastpartnered with the tech hubsacross the region to take part in the 2014 edition of the competition. The hubs include:Outbox(Uganda),Hive Colab(Uganda),Kinu(Tanzania),Buni(Tanzania),kLab(Rwanda),iceaddis(Ethiopia),iBiz Africa(Kenya) andC4DLab(Kenya).

Theselection criteriawas made public prior to the submission deadline. The criteria was applied by a panel of 15 thought leaders on startups drawn from across the region to review the submissions. This culminated in the top 10 startups in five categories being determined. The semifinalists totaling 50 will be competing to be in the list of 25 exceptional mobile startups set to fight it out for market recognition and investor interest during the finals conference on 24th - 25th June. The panel for selection of the final top 25 consists of over 15 active investors among them venture capital firms, angel investors and impact investors.

PIVOT East is organized by m:lab East Africa - a consortium comprising iHub, eMobilis, University of Nairobi and the World Wide Web Foundation. PIVOT East this year has the support of Chase Bank who are the gold sponsors. Other sponsors include InfoDev, Intel, and Facebook.
