HERE COMES TOMI…
This time last year I was lucky enough to have a post included in this newsletter titled “Don’t look to me for the answers – I’m just a conference organiser” where I went into detail about why I love organising conferences, mainly because I’m not dictating anything to anyone and merely facilitating progress and growth. A year later, I remain true to what I wrote.
Conferences can be fantastic enablers – and the fuel that powers them is the speakers. It is those individuals that create the content, that in turn drives the conversations, discussions and interactions. For this year’s Mobile East Africa 2014 conference I have been fortunate enough to build a superb selection of international and local speakers covering a massive range of topics and perspectives.
However, without a doubt, the icing on the 2014 cake is that Tomi Ahonen has agreed to deliver a special address and a full day workshop. I’m aware that you may never have heard the name before, but I would strong recommend that you check him out. Find his blog Communities Dominate Brands, get on Google or continue reading – because a rare opportunity is about to present itself to you.
WHO IS TOMI AHONEN? In the past, an incredible array of people have presented at technology events in East Africa. However, I can assure you that not one of them is as passionate and knowledgeable about mobile technology as Tomi Ahonen. Not one. I admit that this is a bold statement to make, but I’ve witnessed the man in action. I’ve seen attendees walk out after he has delivered an address. I’ve seen them shaking their heads in disbelief at the total and utter information whirlwind that they have just witnessed.
At every event I ask the attendees to evaluate the speakers on content and style. Tomi spoke for me at an event in South Africa in 2012 and received the following scores:
CONTENT: 4.95 out of 5
STYLE: 4.93 out of 5
To put that into perspective: in 5 years of organising these events no one has come close to that, not even slightly. Not only is he one of the most knowledgeable people in the world in terms of mobile, but he also has the ability to deliver an incredibly engaging presentation. In conferencing terms, this is a very rare cocktail – it’s gold dust.
TOMI IN NUMBERS:
If you come along on 12th February then you’ll find out that Tomi Ahonen is a massive numbers fan; he has statistics on almost every aspect of the development of mobile as an industry, but here are his personal numbers:

Referenced in over 140 books
Has spoken at over 300 conferences in 60 countries (soon to be 61!)

And over 400 press articles with leading global titles
The man who coined the phrase “Mobile as the 7th mass media” back in 2007
Do I need to say more? Well I certainly could do – but I would hope that I have done Tomi justice. I also need to point out that there are over 30 other contributors on the agenda at the event – we’ve got people coming in from the UK, India, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa to join a wealth of local presenters. I consider myself very lucky as they are going to be the fuel that powers Mobile East Africa 2014. I hope that you can come along, buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Mobile East Africa 2014 will take place over 3 days on 12th, 13th & 14th February 2014 in the fantastic surroundings of the Southern Sun Mayfair.
Since its debut in 2010 84% of the attendees have rated the event as ‘better’ or ‘much better’ than any other conference they had attended.
